How We Got Our Dream Doorway Without Breaking the Bank

Most of you probably already know that we built our house on a shoestring budget. I’ve mentioned it plenty of times here on the blog—usually during moments of stress, when my hair is one quotation away from turning completely grey. But here’s the thing: a tight budget doesn’t have to mean an ugly home.

Like everyone else, we had a Pinterest mood board full of dreamy ideas. But every time we asked for quotations, we got a different kind of shock—definitely not the fun kind. So, as usual, we had to get creative (read: stubbornly resourceful) to make our dream house happen.

One of our biggest savings came from—believe it or not—the door. You’d think it’s just a door, right? How expensive could it be? Well, if you want a curved door to give your home that charming Spanish feel, it can set you back anywhere from RM5,000 to RM12,000. I know, my wallet cried too. I asked five different contractors, and every single quote was disappointing. Some even said, “Sorry, curve doors are tricky,” and didn’t bother including installation in the price!

So we had a lightbulb moment: instead of splurging on a curved door, why not make a curved entrance and use a regular door? I picked a door with glass panels to keep it interesting—and to let some lovely natural light spill into the entryway.

We installed it just last weekend, and honestly? I’m smitten. It’s not even painted yet, but it already looks so pretty—and the best part? It only cost us RM1,800.

The moral of the story? You can absolutely create beautiful things on a modest budget—as long as you keep your creativity (and your sense of humor) intact. But now I’m curious—what about you? Have you pulled off any genius money-saving hacks in your own home? Do share, happy to hear it.
